John Hughes

For as long as I can remember, I have loved John Hughes films. The first movie of his that I ever saw was Home Alone. As a kid, I loved this movie. When I got older, I started seeking out Hughes’ films because of my fond memories with this film. Of his teen movies, the first I saw was The Breakfast Club and I became obsessed with his work. I continued my Hughes education by watching Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Each movie has solidified my love for Mr. Hughes. His films are different than any other writer/directors work that I have seen. What makes him unique is the way in which he is able to connect and relate to teenagers and life in high school. All of his movies feature an array of different characters, each of which are special in their own right. Hughes has a way of developing his characters so well that the audience knows them inside and out. This is a rare trait to find in the writers and directors today.

All of the films that I mentioned above were written by Hughes. His scripts are incredible and include a lot of dialogue between the characters that are true representations of what teenagers actually talk about, which I love. They feel like a true conversation that isn’t forced or fake. Even though these films were made in the 1980’s, they transcend time and can relate to teens in any day and age. This is a testament to John Hughes and his distinct way of making films.

Sixteen Candles (1984) starring Molly Ringwald as Samantha, Michael Schoeffling as Jake, and Anthony Michael Hall as The Geek

“When you don’t have anything, you don’t have anything to lose, right?”- Samantha

“That’s why they call them crushes. If they were easy, they would call them something else.”- Jim

“Relax, would ya? We have seventy dollars and a pair of girl’s underpants. We’re safe as kittens.”- The Geek

“I want a serious girlfriend. Somebody I can love, that’s gonna love me back. Is that psycho?”- Jake

Brenda: Don’t be a smartass. Mike: Okay, I’ll be a dumbass.”

The Breakfast Club (1985) starring Molly Ringwald as Claire, Judd Nelson as John Bender, Emilio Estevez as Andrew, Ally Sheedy as Allison, and Anthony Michael Hall as Brian

Andrew: Why do you have to insult everybody? John Bender: I’m being honest, asshole. I would expect you know the difference.”

“We’re all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it, that’s all.”- Andrew

“I hate it. I hate having to go along with everything my friends say.”- Claire

“Chicks cannot hold their smoke, that’s what it is”- Brian

“You wanna know what I did to get in here? Nothing. I didn’t have anything better to do”- Allison

“The next time I have to come in here, I’m crackin’ skulls.”- Principal Vernon

“You see us as you want to see us. In the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain, and an athlete, and a basketcase,  a princess, and a criminal. Does that answer your question? Sincerely yours, The Breakfast Club”

Pretty in Pink (1986) starring Molly Ringwald as Andie, Andrew McCarthy as Blane, and Jon Cryer as Duckie

“It’s called a sense of humor. You should get one, they’re nice.”- Duckie

“You know, it’s so insane that someone you’ve never met, never talked to, can be your enemy”- Andie

“You said you couldn’t be with someone who didn’t believe in you. Well, I believed in you. I just didn’t believe in myself.”- Blane

Duckie: What now? Andie: Bed. Duckie: Yours or mine? Ours?”

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) starring Matthew Broderick as Ferris, Alan Ruck as Cameron, Mia Sara as Sloane, and Jeffrey Jones as Ed Rooney

“I am not going to sit on my ass as the events that affect me unfold to determine the course of my life. I’m going to take a stand. I’m going to defend it. Right or wrong, I’m going to defend it.”- Cameron

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”- Ferris

Ed: I don’t trust this kid any further than I can throw him. Grace: Well, with your bad knee Ed, you shouldn’t throw anybody… It’s true.”

“Only the meek get pinched. The bold survive.”- Ferris

Friends is my all time favorite show. In my opinion, no other show can compare to the characters and comedy that defined this show. The cast was amazing and nailed every line. It’s hard to find a sitcom these days that can compete with the smart and hilarious dialogue of this show.

What I love about this show is the characters. They all have something different to offer the show. Their comedy styles are all so unique but they mesh so well together and play off each other in the best, and most hilarious, way. This cast is hands down my favorite cast to ever be on television.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from Friends:

“Your tombstone can say whatever you want it to say. It could say “Ross Geller, Good at Marriage!” Y’know? Mine’s gonna say “Phoebe Buffay, Buried Alive.”- Phoebe

“Obvious beauty is the worst. You know, when it’s right there in your face. Me, I like to work to find someone attractive. Makes me feel like I earned it!”- Ross

“Gum would be perfection.”- Chandler

“Isn’t that just kick-you-in-the-crotch, spit-on-your-neck fantastic?- Rachel

“I’m not great at the advice. Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?”- Chandler

Ross: I was thinking of taking Emma to the playground. Rachel: Oh My God, WHAT? Ross: Like I said, I was thinking of taking Emma to the museum of knives and fire!”

Ross: Your money’s mine, Green! Rachel: Your fly is open, Geller”

“If you absolutely have to tell the truth, at least wait until the timing is right. And that is what deathbeds are for!” – Chandler

“Guys can fake it? Unbelievable! The one thing thats ours!”- Monica

Ross: You wanna hear something weird? Phoebe: Always!”

Joey: It’s just a moo point. Rachel: A moo point? Joey: Yeah, it’s like a cow’s opinion. It doesn’t matter. It’s moo. Rachel: Have I been living with him for too long or did that all just make sense?”

“On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the DUMBEST a person can look, you are definitely 19.”- Chandler

“They don’t know that we know they know we know.”- Phoebe

“If you are going to call me names, I would prefer ‘Ross, the Divorce Force.’ It’s just cooler.”- Ross

Mumford & Sons

mumford sigh  mumford

Mumford & Sons is a fairly new band with a very unique sound. Their folk-rock sound is different from anything I’ve ever heard. Their songs are all so different but fit together perfectly on their albums. I got into them about a year ago and haven’t stopped listening since. They have a great mix of upbeat and slow songs so they are a great band to listen to in any situation. I saw them in concert about a month ago and they are true rockstars. They brought down the house and had everyone on their feet as soon as the first song started. If you haven’t listened to them yet, now is your chance!

Here are some of my favorite songs and lyrics from Mumford & Sons:

“The Cave” from the album Sigh No More (2010)

“Cause I need freedom now
And I need to know how
To live my life as it’s meant to be”

“White Blank Page” from the album Sigh No More (2010)

“But tell me now, where was my fault
In loving you with my whole heart”

“I Will Wait” from the album Babel (2012)

“Now I’ll be bold
As well as strong
And use my head alongside my heart”

“Lover of the Light” from the album Babel (2012)

“But love the one you hold
And I’ll be your goal
To have and to hold
A lover of the light”

“Hopeless Wanderer” from the album Babel (2012)

“So leave that click in my head
And I will remember the words that you said
Left a clouded mind and a heavy heart
But I was sure we could see a new start”

Check out the Mumford & Sons website for updates on the band including tour dates and new music. All of their albums and songs are available for purchase on iTunes.

The Notebook

One of my favorite romantic movies is The Notebook, based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks. I love this movie for three reasons. The first is the love story in general. It is just so beautiful and gives hope to the idea of true love. The second is the format of the film. It is set in two different time periods- the 1940’s and present day- and jumps back and forth between the two. I think this breaks up the monotony of the film and makes it different from other romantic movies. The third reason that I love this movie is because of Ryan Gosling. He is just perfection and I love him. He is so beautiful and my love for him only grows every time I watch this movie. I mean, when he gets right up in Allie’s face and asks “Do you want to dance with me?” ME-OW. He is so sexy. But, I digress. The Notebook is a wonderful and sentimental film filled with great quotes about love.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from The Notebook:

“I want all of you, forever. You and me, everyday.”

“I could be whatever you want. Just tell me what you want and I’ll be that for you.”

“If you’re a bird, I’m a bird.”

“The best love is the kind that awakens the soul and makes us reach for more, that plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds.”

“Despite their differences, they had one important thing in common. They were crazy about each other.”

notebook1 allie_and_noah2 noah-and-allie

“I’ve loved another with all my heart and soul, and for me, that has always been enough.”

“I wrote you 365 letters. I wrote you everyday for a year.”

“Summer romances end for all kinds of reasons. But when all is said and done, they have one thing in common: They are shooting stars-a spectacular moment of light in the heavens, a fleeting glimpse of eternity. And in a flash, they’re gone.”

“I think our love can do anything we want it to.”

Attention Everyone: Lena Dunham is a genius. She is the writer, director, creator and star of the HBO series Girls. Yes, she is THAT awesome. I cannot express how much I adore her for making this show. Girls is only in its second season and has already become one of my favorite shows of all time. The story lines are hilarious and weird (in the best way possible) which only leads to hilarious and weird dialogue. The writing is just so funny and clever, and I find myself cracking up every week. Plus, the show is produced by Judd Apatow, which only further proves how funny it is.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from the show so far:

“I know I always say that he is murdery in a sexy way. But what if he’s murdery in like a murder way?” – Hannah

“It’s a Wednesday night, baby, and I’m alive!”- Hannah

“I’m a lady. She’s a lady. You’re a lady. We’re the ladies!”- Shoshanna

“The worst stuff you say sounds better than the best stuff that some other people say.”- Hannah

“I am 13 pounds overweight and it has been awful for me my whole life!”- Hannah

“You know what the weirdest part of having a job is? You have to be there everyday, even on the days you don’t feel like it.” – Jessa

“I think that I might be the voice of my generation. Or at least a voice of a generation.” – Hannah

“Why don’t you lay this thing down, flip it, and reverse it because I don’t think it’s very nice.” – Hannah

“Sometimes I just wish someone would tell me ‘This is how you should spend the rest of your days’ and ‘This is how the rest of your life should look.'” – Marnie

“When I look at both of you, a Coldplay song plays in my heart.” – Hannah

adele2 adele

I. Love. Adele. The first time I heard her voice, I fell in love. I had never heard music quite like hers, so beautiful and soulful. She truly has one of the best voices in music today, if not THE best. All of her songs are amazing and filled with great lyrics. It’s hard to choose a favorite song because I love each and every one of them.

Some of the videos posted below are from her live concert DVD “Adele: Live at The Royal Albert Hall” and her voice is better than ever. I love when singers sound better live than they do on their albums because it shows that they have actual talent and are true artists. This is exactly what Adele is- a pure and genuine vocalist.

Here are some of my favorite Adele lyrics.

“My Same” from the album 19 (2008)

“I thought I knew myself, somehow you know me more
I’ve never known this, never before
You’re the first to make up whenever we argue
I don’t know who I’d be if I didn’t know you”

“Crazy for You” from the album 19 (2008)

“And every time I’m meant to be acting sensible
You drift into my head
And turn me into a crumbling fool.”

“Take It All” from the album 21 (2011)

“Nothing is better than this
And this is everything we need.”

“One and Only” from the album 21 (2011)

“You never know if you never try
To forgive your past and simply be mine”

“I’ll Be Waiting” from the album 21 (2011)

“You know my heart more than I do,
We were the greatest, me and you”

My Cousin Vinny

my cousin vinny poster

Whenever someone asks me what my favorite movie is, my response is always My Cousin Vinny. Starring Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei, this film is a classic in my household. I can’t even imagine how many times this movie has been quoted in my house. There have been countless times where my family’s dinner conversations consisted solely of My Cousin Vinny quotes. I’m serious, this happens all the time. It’s just one of those films that every scene is hilarious and better than the one before. I’ve seen this movie so many times, yet any time it is on television, I have to watch it. It’s a great movie to watch when you want to laugh and it truly never gets old.

I narrowed down my favorite quotes to just a few, but I’m serious when I say that every line from the movie is worth quoting.

Vinny: You stick out like a sore thumb around here. Mona Lisa: Me? What about you? Vinny: I fit in better than you. At least I’m wearing cowboy boots. Mona Lisa: Yeah, you blend.

“You’re famous for your mud? How’s your chinese food?”- Mona Lisa

“A burp is spontaneous. A burp is not romantic!”- Mona Lisa

“You  f***ing shower, I’ll get your f***ing suit!”- Mona Lisa

“Were these magic grits? Did you buy them from the same guy who sold Jack his beanstalk beans!?”- Vinny

Vinny: Dead on balls accurate? Mona Lisa: It’s an industry term.”

  cousin vinny7  cousin vinny4

“You can’t win a case by yourself, you’re f***ing useless!”- Mona Lisa

“This is a tough decision. Get my ass kicked or collect $200. Let me think. I could use a good ass kicking, I’ll be very honest with you. Nah, I’ll just go with the two-hundred.”- Vinny

“Imagine you’re a deer. You’re prancing along, you get thirsty. You spot a little brook. You put your little deer lips down to the cool clear water. BAM! A f***ing bullet rips off part of your head. Your brain is lying on the ground in little bloody pieces. Now I ask ya, would you give a f*** what kind of pants the son of a bitch who shot you was wearing?”- Mona Lisa

“Oh shit, honey, you got it! The case-cracker! Me in the shower!”- Vinny

“Is there anymore shit we can pile on to the top of the outcome of this case? Is it possible?”- Vinny

What do you think of My Cousin Vinny? Any other fans out there? Would you want to display any of these quotes, or other quotes from the movie, on the walls of your bedroom or movie room? Leave me a comment with your thoughts!

Grey’s Anatomy

greys 7

I’ve been watching Grey’s Anatomy since it started in 2005. There is something about this medical drama that always seems to draw my attention. As the seasons have gone on, the story lines have become increasingly dramatic, albeit sometimes ridiculous, and I keep coming back for more. I think the thing that I love most about this show is the writing. I love the mix of serious and witty dialogue that a lot of other dramas just do not feature. But my true adoration of the show is the narration at the beginning (and sometimes the end) of each episode. The narration is not entirely specific to the show itself or the characters, like other shows such as How I Met Your Mother or Sex and The City. The narration is there to provide the audience with something to think about before the episode starts. It generally sets up each episode and is usually inspirational and uplifting. It is a great way to start off the show each week and gives the audience something to think about passed the events of the episode.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from the show, both the narration and dialogue.

“You know as well as I do it’s not about what you look like, or your job, or how successful you are. It’s about having people in your life that you love and who love you. That’s all that matters.”

“The expected is what keeps us steady. It’s the unexpected that changes our lives forever.”

“We don’t wish for the easy stuff. We wish for big things. Things that are ambitious, out of reach. We wish because we need help and we’re scared and we know we may be asking too much. We still wish, though, because sometimes they come true.”

“Ask most people what they want out of life and the answer is simple- to be happy.”

“Sometimes we learn something new about the past that changes everything we know about the present.”

greys (1)

“Knowing is better than wondering, waking is better than sleeping, and even the biggest failure, even the worst, most intractable mistake beats the hell out of never trying.”

“The truth isn’t where it ends, that’s just where you begin with a whole new set of questions.”

“Mistakes are painful, but they’re the only way to find out who we really are.”

“If you look around, things are pretty amazing. So stop for a second, enjoy the beauty, feel the magic, drink it in. ‘Cause it won’t last forever.”

“Fresh start, clean slate, a world of possibilities. But no matter what new adventure you’re embarking on, you’re still you.”

“Pick Me. Choose Me. Love Me.”

Ingrid Michaelson

album-girls-and-boys  ingrid  everybody  HumanAgain

One of my favorite artists is Ingrid Michaelson. I recently saw her in concert and she puts on one hell of a show. She’s funny and charming and effortlessly adorable. She interacts with her audience in a way that most artists do not. She really connects to her fans and knows what they want to hear. To top it all off, she can ACTUALLY sing and play music. She truly has the voice of an angel. Don’t you hate it when you go to concert and the artist cannot sing live? It’s always such a disappointment.  With Ingrid, however, you get your money’s worth.

What I love most about her music is the lyrics to her songs.  They are all so honest and filled with emotion. When I think of a true songwriter, I think of Ingrid Michaelson.

Here are a few of my favorite songs by Ingrid Michaelson and my favorite lyrics from each song.

“Breakable” from the album Girls and Boys (2007)

“and we are so fragile
and our cracking bones make noise
and we are just
breakable, breakable, breakable girls and boys”

“You and I”  from the album Be Ok (2008)

“don’t you worry there my honey
we might not have any money
but we’ve got our love to pay the bills”

“Soldier” from the album Everybody (2009)

“and so it goes, this soldier knows
the battle with the heart isn’t easily won”

“Blood Brothers” from the album Human Again (2012)

“cause we’re all the same under a different name
we’re all blood, we’re all blood, blood brothers”

“Parachute”  (2010)

“just hold on to me, i’ll hold on to you
it’s you and me up against the world it’s you and me”

Mean Girls

mean girls poster

It is only fair that I start my blog off with the movie that I catch myself quoting the most. That, of course, is Mean Girls. I pride myself in the fact that I can quote this movie from start to finish. It’s almost impossible for other people to watch it with me because they would rather hear the actors talk instead of me screaming the lines at the screen (crazy, I know).

I’ve been quoting this film since it came out in 2004. I don’t know how she did it, but Tina Fey, the screenwriter of the film (and all around genius), was able to write a script that provides the world with endless amounts of lines to use in their daily lives. The movie is a somewhat realistic, although exaggerated, depiction of every high-schooler’s life. I think this is why it’s dialogue can be quoted in any situation. Yes, I do mean ANY situation- happy, sad, funny or serious- the perfect quote is out there!
