John Hughes

For as long as I can remember, I have loved John Hughes films. The first movie of his that I ever saw was Home Alone. As a kid, I loved this movie. When I got older, I started seeking out Hughes’ films because of my fond memories with this film. Of his teen movies, the first I saw was The Breakfast Club and I became obsessed with his work. I continued my Hughes education by watching Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Each movie has solidified my love for Mr. Hughes. His films are different than any other writer/directors work that I have seen. What makes him unique is the way in which he is able to connect and relate to teenagers and life in high school. All of his movies feature an array of different characters, each of which are special in their own right. Hughes has a way of developing his characters so well that the audience knows them inside and out. This is a rare trait to find in the writers and directors today.

All of the films that I mentioned above were written by Hughes. His scripts are incredible and include a lot of dialogue between the characters that are true representations of what teenagers actually talk about, which I love. They feel like a true conversation that isn’t forced or fake. Even though these films were made in the 1980’s, they transcend time and can relate to teens in any day and age. This is a testament to John Hughes and his distinct way of making films.

Sixteen Candles (1984) starring Molly Ringwald as Samantha, Michael Schoeffling as Jake, and Anthony Michael Hall as The Geek

“When you don’t have anything, you don’t have anything to lose, right?”- Samantha

“That’s why they call them crushes. If they were easy, they would call them something else.”- Jim

“Relax, would ya? We have seventy dollars and a pair of girl’s underpants. We’re safe as kittens.”- The Geek

“I want a serious girlfriend. Somebody I can love, that’s gonna love me back. Is that psycho?”- Jake

Brenda: Don’t be a smartass. Mike: Okay, I’ll be a dumbass.”

The Breakfast Club (1985) starring Molly Ringwald as Claire, Judd Nelson as John Bender, Emilio Estevez as Andrew, Ally Sheedy as Allison, and Anthony Michael Hall as Brian

Andrew: Why do you have to insult everybody? John Bender: I’m being honest, asshole. I would expect you know the difference.”

“We’re all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it, that’s all.”- Andrew

“I hate it. I hate having to go along with everything my friends say.”- Claire

“Chicks cannot hold their smoke, that’s what it is”- Brian

“You wanna know what I did to get in here? Nothing. I didn’t have anything better to do”- Allison

“The next time I have to come in here, I’m crackin’ skulls.”- Principal Vernon

“You see us as you want to see us. In the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain, and an athlete, and a basketcase,  a princess, and a criminal. Does that answer your question? Sincerely yours, The Breakfast Club”

Pretty in Pink (1986) starring Molly Ringwald as Andie, Andrew McCarthy as Blane, and Jon Cryer as Duckie

“It’s called a sense of humor. You should get one, they’re nice.”- Duckie

“You know, it’s so insane that someone you’ve never met, never talked to, can be your enemy”- Andie

“You said you couldn’t be with someone who didn’t believe in you. Well, I believed in you. I just didn’t believe in myself.”- Blane

Duckie: What now? Andie: Bed. Duckie: Yours or mine? Ours?”

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) starring Matthew Broderick as Ferris, Alan Ruck as Cameron, Mia Sara as Sloane, and Jeffrey Jones as Ed Rooney

“I am not going to sit on my ass as the events that affect me unfold to determine the course of my life. I’m going to take a stand. I’m going to defend it. Right or wrong, I’m going to defend it.”- Cameron

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”- Ferris

Ed: I don’t trust this kid any further than I can throw him. Grace: Well, with your bad knee Ed, you shouldn’t throw anybody… It’s true.”

“Only the meek get pinched. The bold survive.”- Ferris

Friends is my all time favorite show. In my opinion, no other show can compare to the characters and comedy that defined this show. The cast was amazing and nailed every line. It’s hard to find a sitcom these days that can compete with the smart and hilarious dialogue of this show.

What I love about this show is the characters. They all have something different to offer the show. Their comedy styles are all so unique but they mesh so well together and play off each other in the best, and most hilarious, way. This cast is hands down my favorite cast to ever be on television.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from Friends:

“Your tombstone can say whatever you want it to say. It could say “Ross Geller, Good at Marriage!” Y’know? Mine’s gonna say “Phoebe Buffay, Buried Alive.”- Phoebe

“Obvious beauty is the worst. You know, when it’s right there in your face. Me, I like to work to find someone attractive. Makes me feel like I earned it!”- Ross

“Gum would be perfection.”- Chandler

“Isn’t that just kick-you-in-the-crotch, spit-on-your-neck fantastic?- Rachel

“I’m not great at the advice. Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?”- Chandler

Ross: I was thinking of taking Emma to the playground. Rachel: Oh My God, WHAT? Ross: Like I said, I was thinking of taking Emma to the museum of knives and fire!”

Ross: Your money’s mine, Green! Rachel: Your fly is open, Geller”

“If you absolutely have to tell the truth, at least wait until the timing is right. And that is what deathbeds are for!” – Chandler

“Guys can fake it? Unbelievable! The one thing thats ours!”- Monica

Ross: You wanna hear something weird? Phoebe: Always!”

Joey: It’s just a moo point. Rachel: A moo point? Joey: Yeah, it’s like a cow’s opinion. It doesn’t matter. It’s moo. Rachel: Have I been living with him for too long or did that all just make sense?”

“On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the DUMBEST a person can look, you are definitely 19.”- Chandler

“They don’t know that we know they know we know.”- Phoebe

“If you are going to call me names, I would prefer ‘Ross, the Divorce Force.’ It’s just cooler.”- Ross

Mumford & Sons

mumford sigh  mumford

Mumford & Sons is a fairly new band with a very unique sound. Their folk-rock sound is different from anything I’ve ever heard. Their songs are all so different but fit together perfectly on their albums. I got into them about a year ago and haven’t stopped listening since. They have a great mix of upbeat and slow songs so they are a great band to listen to in any situation. I saw them in concert about a month ago and they are true rockstars. They brought down the house and had everyone on their feet as soon as the first song started. If you haven’t listened to them yet, now is your chance!

Here are some of my favorite songs and lyrics from Mumford & Sons:

“The Cave” from the album Sigh No More (2010)

“Cause I need freedom now
And I need to know how
To live my life as it’s meant to be”

“White Blank Page” from the album Sigh No More (2010)

“But tell me now, where was my fault
In loving you with my whole heart”

“I Will Wait” from the album Babel (2012)

“Now I’ll be bold
As well as strong
And use my head alongside my heart”

“Lover of the Light” from the album Babel (2012)

“But love the one you hold
And I’ll be your goal
To have and to hold
A lover of the light”

“Hopeless Wanderer” from the album Babel (2012)

“So leave that click in my head
And I will remember the words that you said
Left a clouded mind and a heavy heart
But I was sure we could see a new start”

Check out the Mumford & Sons website for updates on the band including tour dates and new music. All of their albums and songs are available for purchase on iTunes.

The Notebook

One of my favorite romantic movies is The Notebook, based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks. I love this movie for three reasons. The first is the love story in general. It is just so beautiful and gives hope to the idea of true love. The second is the format of the film. It is set in two different time periods- the 1940’s and present day- and jumps back and forth between the two. I think this breaks up the monotony of the film and makes it different from other romantic movies. The third reason that I love this movie is because of Ryan Gosling. He is just perfection and I love him. He is so beautiful and my love for him only grows every time I watch this movie. I mean, when he gets right up in Allie’s face and asks “Do you want to dance with me?” ME-OW. He is so sexy. But, I digress. The Notebook is a wonderful and sentimental film filled with great quotes about love.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from The Notebook:

“I want all of you, forever. You and me, everyday.”

“I could be whatever you want. Just tell me what you want and I’ll be that for you.”

“If you’re a bird, I’m a bird.”

“The best love is the kind that awakens the soul and makes us reach for more, that plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds.”

“Despite their differences, they had one important thing in common. They were crazy about each other.”

“I’ve loved another with all my heart and soul, and for me, that has always been enough.”

“I wrote you 365 letters. I wrote you everyday for a year.”

“Summer romances end for all kinds of reasons. But when all is said and done, they have one thing in common: They are shooting stars-a spectacular moment of light in the heavens, a fleeting glimpse of eternity. And in a flash, they’re gone.”

“I think our love can do anything we want it to.”

Attention Everyone: Lena Dunham is a genius. She is the writer, director, creator and star of the HBO series Girls. Yes, she is THAT awesome. I cannot express how much I adore her for making this show. Girls is only in its second season and has already become one of my favorite shows of all time. The story lines are hilarious and weird (in the best way possible) which only leads to hilarious and weird dialogue. The writing is just so funny and clever, and I find myself cracking up every week. Plus, the show is produced by Judd Apatow, which only further proves how funny it is.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from the show so far:

“I know I always say that he is murdery in a sexy way. But what if he’s murdery in like a murder way?” – Hannah

“It’s a Wednesday night, baby, and I’m alive!”- Hannah

“I’m a lady. She’s a lady. You’re a lady. We’re the ladies!”- Shoshanna

“The worst stuff you say sounds better than the best stuff that some other people say.”- Hannah

“I am 13 pounds overweight and it has been awful for me my whole life!”- Hannah

“You know what the weirdest part of having a job is? You have to be there everyday, even on the days you don’t feel like it.” – Jessa

“I think that I might be the voice of my generation. Or at least a voice of a generation.” – Hannah

“Why don’t you lay this thing down, flip it, and reverse it because I don’t think it’s very nice.” – Hannah

“Sometimes I just wish someone would tell me ‘This is how you should spend the rest of your days’ and ‘This is how the rest of your life should look.'” – Marnie

“When I look at both of you, a Coldplay song plays in my heart.” – Hannah
